There are few things I love more than antiquing. Maybe it’s the food stylist in me, but I love pulling together a plate, table, room, or home. My husband likes to say that it’s really just “furniture shopping.” Maybe it is! Since these destinations contain pieces that span decades, aesthetics, and level of “newness,” this could be true. Either way, I’m in.
I’ve been known to drive Out East just for the day to do a little sleuthing. Here are my most recent top five destinations.
NOTE: The hardest part in creating this list – and in the physical shopping – is not that these stores are better than those not listed… it’s just so often that most are not open! Make sure to check the days and times of operations.
The last piece of advice… don’t forget to negotiate. Yes, even people in The Hamptons negotiate. Even if they have money. Everyone negotiates. Bonus points and prices for off-season negotiations.
1. Mecox, 1040 Montauk Highway, Water Mill
One of my favorites. It definitely feels more like “furniture shopping” rather than antique-ing. You don’t have to hunt and scout. Everything is beautifully curated and designed, so you can envision taking multiple pieces home and enjoying them in a collection, just as you saw them in the store.
2. English Country Home, 26 Snake Hollow Road, Bridgehampton2
Guys, this place is PACKED. There is so much here. Which is both a good thing and a bad thing. If this might overwhelm you, it is not the place for you. But you'll win if you love looking for just about anything and have the imagination to plug and play these gems into your home mentally. It is the best collection of lighting, especially chandeliers.
3. Wyeth, 3654 Montauk Highway, Sagaponack
If I had all the money, I would shop here almost exclusively. Ha! The way designer antique furniture has been maintained and restored here is remarkable. It reads more mid-century modern vibes, but the staff is incredibly knowledgeable, and anything you get here will be one-of-a-kind. And cool.
4. Stage Street Antiques, 114 Division Street @ Sage Street, Sag Harbor
There’s no doubt that when you’re in Sag Harbor, you can feel its history. I love this double-structure antique store. Both antiques themselves. Here, you’ll find gift-able antiques, such as plates, candle holders, silver, etc., which date back to when Sag Harbor was settled.
5. Collette, several locations 2231 Montauk Highway, Bridgehampton
Collette is the list’s only consignment store. It’s a great place to offload furniture and grab interesting pieces you cannot find anywhere else. Or a house that sells and liquidates everything. This is a big store with a more warehouse feel and is not curated, but it’s usually where I start to grab a unique piece or two, maybe.
